Dr. Karen Majewski-elected Hamtramck City Council President
MICHIGAN: Karen Majewski became the president of the City Council of Hamtramck, Michigan, USA. Hamtramck is the home of the most varied ethnic mix of people and customs from around the world with high percentage of the Polish Americans living in the Detroit metropolitan area. There are estimated 23,000 people living over there. Dr. Karen Majewski is also the executive secretary of the Polish American Historical Association. She was awarded with “Distinguished Service Award” by PAHA in 2002.
Hamtramck has been a destination and become home for many immigrants to the United States for most of this century. Originally established in 1798 as the township of Hamtramck, in what was then part of the Northwest Territory, Hamtramck was organized as a village in 1901.
While a quiet farming town at the turn of the century, the population soared during 1910 -20, when it was the fastest-growing community in the nation, spurred by the booming automobile industry. Thousands of immigrants, mostly of Polish and other European descent, settled there.
There are several city officials with the Polish names in Hamtramck area: Tom Jankowski, Mayor of Hamtramck, Robert J. Cwiertniewicz, City Clerk, Michael A. Wilk, City Treasurer, Karen Majewski, new President of City Council.
Dr. Karen Majewski is an author of a book, entitled: “Traitors and True Poles”. It is the review of the Polish immigrant literature. The book has been published by University of Ohio. She has chosen to concentrate on novels and stories written by Polish immigrant authors and published in Polish in the United States between 1881 and 1939.The works have been hard to find and she received help from numerous resources: Universities, the Warsaw Polish National Archives, the Polish American historical Association as well as librarians, professors, and authors.
